Writing Through Poetry

Year 6

Overview

‘Poetry is a packsack of invisible keepsakes.’  Carl Sandburg

A project aimed at Year 6 pupils, with teacher resources provided. Over the course of 4 weeks, our pupils study a poem a week. The children discuss the poems and share responses on a collaborative blog – before working on their own poem which they submit to a network-wide competition to discover our own Poet Laureate and individual school’s poets of the year. This project really helps to develop pupils’ (and schools’) enthusiasm and interest in poetry, and enables pupils to work with pupils from other schools while teachers use and evaluate blogging as a tool for extension work and collaborative learning.
The 2020 poetry course focused on the theme of hope. Pupils explored a diverse range of poets including: Dr Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Rachel Rooney. The 2020 Maamulaha Poet Laureate was Kade Hammond from Robert Blair school. You can review her winning entry and the work produced by the Maamulaha pupils at: https://islingtongovuk.j2bloggy.com/maamulaha2021/
