Writing Through Art

Year 4 pupils from across the network participate in the Writing through Art project. This project is run in conjunction with an art gallery and partners have included The Government Art Collection and English Heritage.

Pupils consider one painting a week for 5 weeks. The focus of the lessons are primarily speaking and listening initially, as pupils create their own narratives to accompany the paintings. Once they are hooked into the painting, further background details are provided and writing and art tasks are enjoyed. These creative responses and pieces of writing are shared via the weekly blog allowing pupils to provide peer assessment and encouragement.

After studying the five paintings in detail, pupils then visit the gallery to see them; a source of great excitement. Pupils share their prior knowledge of the artworks during the visits and are provided with an opportunity to ask further questions.
